Along the west coast of Greenland from the Disko Bay to Narsarsuaq
The journey begins at the Hotel Arctic in Ilulissat. The hotel has a fantastic view of the Disko bay with its icebergs and the town with the colorful houses. After four days in Ilulissat we begin the fantastic 1200 km long voyage south onboard the coastal ship M/S Sarfaq Ittuk. Get close to the harbour environment in the smaller seaports, where the locals often gather when a ship comes in. The voyage begins among majestic icebergs as we look for seals and whales. The nature and the clean and crisp air will leave you breathless. The last part of the voyage brings you through fiords and past farms where graceful sheep pastures stretches right down to the water. See the mountains come so close that you can almost touch them. There will be plenty of opportunities for participating in exiting excursions during your stay in Narsarsuaq. Tours like hikes to the inland ice, visits to a local sheep farmer and the place where the Vikings landed are just some of the possibilities. Until mid July you can experience the Midnight sun.
Day 1, Thursday: Copenhagen–Kangerlussuaq (Søndre Strømfjord)–Ilulissat (Jakobshavn) Departure from Copenhagen to Kangerlussuaq and Ilulissat. Transfer and accommodation Hotel Arctic. During the afternoon there will be an information meeting as well as a guided tour of the town. Dinner at the hotel in the evening.
Day 2-3, Friday-Saturday: Ilulissat (Jakobshavn) The days are at your disposal with plenty of possibilities for excursions on the sea, land and in the air. We especially recommend a daytrip with M/S Smilla to the breaking gletcher Eqi, an experience, which should be on your Ilulissat wishing list. Here it is possible to see the 5 km wide ice front breaking massive chunks of ice into the sea, with a roar. Remember to book your excursion from home with the rest of your trip. If you just prefer a relaxing day, you are free to walk around the town and enjoy the surrounding nature. Dinner each evening at the hotel.
Day 4, Sunday: Ilulissat (Jakobshavn) – Aasiaat (Egedesminde) The morning is at your disposal. In the afternoon transport to the coastal ship M/S Sarfaq Ittuk, and the beautiful trip out of the Disko bay begins. The best area for watching hump back whales playing in the sea will be between Ilulissat and Aasiaat. Beside whales there will be a number of different seabirds to look out for. This area has the world’s largest colony of arctic terns. The ship will call at the following ports today: Aasiaat during the evening.
Day 5, Monday: Sisimiut (Holsteinsborg)–Kangaamiut-Maniitsoq (Sukkertoppen) As the trip continues south the day can be spent on deck watching for whales and enjoying the beautiful coastal scenery. The ship has now left the Disko Bay and the landscape becomes rougher and steeper. The landmark “Kællingehætten” stands behind the town of Sisimiut and creates a fascinating background to the beautiful and colorful Greenland wooden houses, the town is known for. During your visit a guided tour of the town will take place. Early evening we will call shortly at Kangaamiut, and later in the evening we arrive at the town of Maniitsoq. The nature here is among the most beautiful in Greenland and the coastal line is very special with plenty of opportunity of experiencing the bountiful birdlife. The ship will call at the following ports today: Sisimiut, Kangaamiut and Maniitsoq.
Day 6, Tuesday: Nuuk (Godthåb)-Qeqertarsuatsiaat (Fiskenæsset)-Paamiut (Frederikshåb) The ship is now south of the polar circle and arrives in Nuuk, the capital of Greenland. Here there will be a guided tour of the old “Godthåb” and the new “Nuuk”. The tour includes a visit to the culture center, Katuaq with its distinctive architecture. The ship will call at the following ports today: Nuuk, Qeqertarsuatsiaat and Paamiut (round midnight).
Day 7, Wednesday: Arsuk-Qaqortoq (Julianehåb) Today the ship reaches southern Greenland, which is known for its fertile and mild climate. Depending on the season the flowers will be blooming, and you understand why the Vikings chose to settle down in this particular area. Early morning a brief stop in Arsuk before the vessel during the afternoon calls at Qaqortoq. In Qaqortoq transfer from the ship to Hotel Qaqortoq for your overnight stay. In Qaqortoq a city tour with a local guide has been arranged. Dinner in the hotel.
Day 8, Thursday: Qaqortoq (Julianehåb) The day at leasure. Optional excursions may be booked and bought. Qaqortoq is one of the most charming towns of Greenland.
